Kamakhya Temple is situated at entrance of the city of Guwahati and is one of the major hindu piligrimage centre in Eastern India. Kamakhya temple is Nilachal Hills and 800 meters above the sea level.


In fact the temple is part of a chain of Hindu shrine built based on the legacy of Lord Shiva and Sati Devi , As per the belief when Lord Shiva was disgraced by Sati Devi’s father Daksha, Unable to tolerate Sati Devi  jumped to the yoga Agni and burnt herself. Hearing this news Lord Shiva came back to the place and took the burned body of Sati Devi and went to the Himalayas.. On the way the body parts fell to different parts and all these places is holy places. Kamakhya is one of the places. In olden days the devotees used to Sacrifice goats , buffalos and various birds in this temple to please the goddess.


Kamakhya temple is a complex of temples, there are five different Shiva temples, three Vishnu temples and also temples of Devi Kali, Tara and Bhairavi. You can reach the temple through your own transport or use a public transport frequently available till the temple complex. If you want you can also climb up the hill through two well maintained steps up the hill. It’s a very common sight of disciples clean their legs and hands before visiting the Kamakhya temple and also some offering rituals for the loved ones attained heavenly abode.
There is also a belief, Naraka fell in love with Goddess Kamakhya and she was not in favor. To reject his proposal without annoying him, she placed a condition to marry him. The condition is an impossible task. The task is to build steps (staircase) from the bottom of Nilachal hills t0 the temple. Naraka gladly agreed and started building it. Surprisingly he was almost done it. Goddess Kamakhya was worried and she managed to play trick her magical powers and made the cock crow and Naraka misunderstood that it’s dawn and stopped his work. But later understood the trick and killed the cock. This incomplete staircase is called Makhelauja Path. So to satisfy the goddess here bird sacrifice was common in the past, Now instead of sacrificing animals and birds are donated at this temple.


There are different pujas performed based on tantric tradition on a daily basis. The famous festival of this temple is Ambabachi Mela and mostly performed in the mid of June, Which is very exciting and ideal to visit this temple during this. The temple is open from morning 5.30 Am to 5.30 Pm daily.
