New Delhi: A series of accidents near the hill shrine of Sabarimala on Friday left over 100 pilgrims dead.
Sabarimala spokesperson Rahul Easwar told that 109 pilgrims were dead and twelve were missing. they also told that Kerala Chief Minister has called for a gathering.
Intelligence Chief A Hemachandran told that there was an autorickshaw, which ran over some people followed by a stampede due to which the casualties reached above 100. The accident occurred near Vandiperiyar in Kerala's Idukki district.

This happened barely two hours after lakhs of devotees had witnessed the Makar Jyoti on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. Rescue operations continued through Friday night and are continuing. Defence Minister AK Antony told that the army and navy have joined the rescue operations.

Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan, condoling the incident said, "The devotees themselves opted this place as they could get a lovely view of the Jyoti and the tragedy happened."

Kerala Finance Minister TM Thomas Isaac told that 56 victims have been identified till now, out of which most of the victims are from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Out of the victims identified, fifteen were from Karnataka, two from Belgaum and others from different parts of Kerala. Most victims from Andhra Pradesh were from Medak, Karimnagar, Prakasam, Nalgonda and Krishna districts.

This is the worst catastrophe Kerala has seen in very almost 60 years. Two tragedies that come close in comparison are the cracker hut fire in 1952 which led to the deaths of 66 people and then more recently in 1999, when 52 people died in a stampede in Pampa.
