Shanthi theatre, one of the very oldest theatre in Chennai, which was inaugurated on 12th January1961, by Mr. K. Kamarajar who was the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu. This is the first Air Conditioned theatre in Chennai. The first movie screened in this theatre during the inauguration was the movie on Lord Venkateshwara. The first Tamil film released on this theatre was Annapurna films "THOOYA ULLAM" of Nageswara Rao and Savithri.
NADIGAR THILAGAM SIVAJI GANESAN AND SHANTHI THEATRE:
We can’t separate Shanthi theatre and Nadigar Thilagam Sivaji Ganesan, the reason why is, the first Sivaji ganesan movie screened in this theatre was Buddha pictures PAAVA MANNIPPU,this was the first silver jublee movie in Shanthi theatre,after this 82 films of Sivaji ganesan were screened,out of which 6 films were celebrated silver jublee one among that was "PAAVA MANNIPPU" others were "THIRUVILAYADAL,VASANTHA MALIGAI,THANGAPPATHAKKAM,THIRISOOLAM and MUTHAL MARIYADAI" and 35 films of his were run for more than 100 days,do we need any strong reason for the bonding between these two and later on he took the possession of Shanthi theatre.
HIT MOVIES OF SHANTHI THEATRE
Shanthi theatre has given so many hits for all the other big heros of tamil industry for example,"KALAIGNAN" and "VETRI VIzHA" for UlagaNayagan Kamalhasan,
"RAJAKUMARAN" and "CHINNA THAMBI" for Ilaya thilagam Prabhu
MANNAN and CHANDRA MUKHI for Superstar Rajinikanth.In this, Super star's "CHANDRAMUKHI" has created a history in Tamil cinema industry,it was screened for 888 days which outscored M.K.T.BAGAVATHAR'S "HARIDASS".
On the eve of celebrating the release of CHANDRA MUKHI it was renovated on13/04/2005 and inagurated by Super star Rajinikanth.
OTHER LANGUAGE MOVIES
Shanthi theatre has screened other lanuage movies other than Tamil,the first Hindi movie screened was,the very popular movie "KALPANA",the second Hindi movie was Raj kapoor's "SANGAM" which was the first other language movie celebrated siver jublee.
The first Telugu movie was "NEEDALENI AADATHI" and the first Malayalam movie was"THACHOLI AMBU".
The new SAI SHANTHI
the Sai shanthi theatre was opened by Ulaganayagan Kamalhasan on 11/10/2006,screening was commenced on 21/10/2006,now Shanthi theatre has reached its new mile stone of opening this Sai shanthi.The Shanthi theatre's records will continue as days goes.
