We visited the falls during Gandhi Jayanti holiday. We arrived at Gaganchukki falls after driving for three hours on the good and wide, but mostly deserted, NH209 via Kanakpura from Bangalore. As KRS dam had released the water, the falls was enjoyable to watch. Try to visit the falls either in the morning or in the evening as it was quite sunny when we visited during noon. Gaganchukki is access is through Shivanasamudra Hydro Electric Project area and the view point here is facing the falls.
Barachukki is more enjoyable as the stone paved steps lead you to the foot of the falls for a nice bath. There are coracle rides as well which take you closer to falls and I recommend this. They charge Rs.50 per person.
The only downfall is the lack of food facility in the vicinity. We could not find any decent restaurants in the area except for KSTDC run Mayura at Gaganchukki.
Only Barachukki demands an entry fee of Rs.20 for a two wheeler by the forest dept. There was another illegal toll collection at the Shivanasamudra temple on the way.
